Looking for a wonderful way to enjoy a spring day? Pick Thursday to come to Downtown Crossville and take part in a variety of wonderful and educational opportunities while you support your local community.
Breakfast or Coffee - Come to one of our wonderful family owned businesses for breakfast, coffee, and a friendly smile. Enjoy a country breakfast at Fifth Street Diner or your favorite latte and pastry at Downtown Java. Both family owned, enjoy a welcoming hello and read your newspaper.
Expand Your Knowledge - Step into the Military Museum and truly appreciate the meaning of the "Volunteer State". Operated and staffed by volunteers, the Military Museum is constantly rotating and changing their displays and material. Cross the street and enter the South's smallest museum, the Native Stone Museum. Although small, this historic building is packed with information and pictures of the native Crab Orchard Stone. Enjoy the small gift shop.
Lunch - So many wonderful options in Downtown Crossville. Truly something to please everyone. Retrace your steps to enjoy a healthy sandwich, salad or bowl of soup at Express Lunch. Family operated, this restaurant has take out and inside seating. Enjoy the community table to meet someone new. Interested in a fuller menu? Check out Fortes on the Courthouse Square. It's owned by two brothers and their wives who are more than happy to welcome you to their establishment. Originally from New Jersey, John and Kenny Forte have created something special in the old feed store building. Want something quieter, stroll over to the amazing Art Circle Public Library. Opened in 2010, the Library Cafe offers you a place to dine on sandwiches and salads while enjoying the Great Reading Room. Pull out your book or newspaper to enjoy with your lunch. Want to feel like you entered another world? Visit the Cafe at Fifth Street Marketplace for quiche, sandwiches and salads. Walking in you will feel like you have entered a marketplace in a much larger city or country. Need to get back to the Depot, check out Boston's behind the Depot. A fixture for many years, Boston's offers the homemade salads, sandwiches, and soups to go or dine in.
Dessert - No trip to downtown Crossville would be complete without a world famous hand dipped milkshake at Mitchell Drugs. Sit at the 100+ year old counter and enjoy the historic Mural out the window. Sit at a table and talk with any number of local characters and historians who stop by. If you are lucky enough to meet Dr. Bob Mitchell or his wife Mary Lou, ask them about the history of Mitchell Drugs. If you are lucky, they will show you their cabinet of historic pharmacy equipment. We go there often, so there are no calories in milkshakes on Thursdays!
Sidewalk Sales - Walk off your lunch and enjoy the variety of sidewalk sales by local merchants. Family owned businesses have been the backbone of our community, so check out their specials and talk with the owners. Many have been on Main Street for years. If you are looking for something unique and different, check out Hill's Department Store, Bella Butik, The Screen Door, Three Stones, Gigi's, Heartland Candles, Fifth Street Marketplace, and French's.
Sustainable Farmer's Market - Before you get in your car to head home, check out the charming Farmer's Market that starts at 3:30pm in the Depot parking lot and back porch. Supported by local farmers who live within a 50 mile radius of Crossville, you can enjoy fresh vegetables, flowers, pastries, dairy, meat, jams & jellies, and more. Sign up to order on line and your order will be ready for pick up. Try out vegetables that are new to you - most of the farmers have a recipe to share!
Contented and happy, pack yourself and your treasures into your vehicle to head home. Don't forget to tell friends and family to make Thursday the Downtown Destination Day!
